Stator smoking but still working?

Hey all, I have a 1995 Indy Efi 500, I removed the engine from my sled and installed it in another chassis, same year same model, just nicer:)
Finally got the swap all complete and fired her up, ran real good for about 3 minutes and then I shut her down to check the coolant level and noticed smoke coming from the engine, it’s definitely coming from the stator but not sure why, all wires are plugged to right spot, every time the power is on from the battery you can hear it starting to fry! I have unplugged everything except for the plug to the stator, still doing it.
So how do I check the stator, does anyone know what the specs for it are and how to go about checking it for a direct short? Thanks for the help

Check for a pinched wire or short.
 
Ok so the stator is bad after checking ohm readings, and i got a new one coming, but i also have another problem the battery reg/rec is bad as well and i new this before just haven't fixed it yet, my question is this part is discontinued and no longer available and ive seen a lot of threads talking about this problem, but Im still lost on the best way to proceed, aftermarket parts that will work? or a way to make something out of aftermarket parts? also the sled is actually a 1992, Im not sure why the title says 95 but after looking at various sites and schematics I've determined that my sled is in fact a 92.
the reg/rec on it now has 3 wires to it and it sits right below the battery box, the red wire goes to the battery and charges it and the 2 gray wires com from the stator.
