2007 Polaris Edge 550 LX
Good afternoon all, I am new to snowmobiling and acquired a free 2007 Edge 550LX from my cousin. He said it had been sitting for a couple years so I started with what I thought were the obvious maintenance things;

I broke down and cleaned out the carbs, blew out fuel lines, drained gas in the tank, broke down and cleaned the fuel pump, new plugs, and dumped some sea foam in the tank along with some new gas.

After doing this the sled seamed to fire up right away and was idleing really well. I drove it across the yard and parked it to wait for some snow to show up.

When I went to use it again a few days later the engine again fired right and up was responding to the throttle very well but the track would not move. The engine would rev up and it just seemed like the track was stuck. When I raised the track in the air it would spin without any issues but once dropped to the ground it just didn’t want to move.

After some research I tried to start checking things off the list- checked brake which was not jammed up, opened gear box and chain and gears all looked good, track tension does not seam to be too tight, did visual inspection of bearing and both sides seem to be centered and not failed. The track would move by hand when elevated but took a little force to do so.

When I dropped the sled back down to see if anything I had done worked it seamed to be running great and again I was able to drive it across the yard to load into my truck and try to take it for a ride. I will say I did smell a little burnt rubber and it seamed like it was still fighting something at this point.

As I was getting ready to load up the sled, it again would not move but this time the engine was bogging down and stalling. It would start up but when I tried to give it gas to push into gear it would bog down and eventually stall.

Sorry about the long post but I am trying to provide as much info as I can on this as I’m out of ideas. I am new to snowmobiles but am fairly familiar with small engine repair. I really don’t know what else could cause this and am hoping to dig into some brains that are much more knowledgeable about this than myself. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you still have carb issues.
1.) Take the carbs off (without losing any of the fuel in the carb) and drain the fuel in the carbs into a clean glass container to check for water or other contaminantes.
2.) Check choke plunger adjustment.
3.) Pressure test needle & seat.

When you drove it across the yard the first time was there snow. Usually if your suspension sleds melt to the track the next time you go to love you will burn the belt until the melted sleides pop free also check your drive lacks bearing under the secondary clutch.

There was snow the first time. Only an inch or two but it was there. My questions is why would it drive fine one second then be locked up 10 minutes later when I went to load it into the truck. What is the drive lack bearing? I can check that as well.

The drive axle is what turns your track. There is one bearing on each side. One is in the chai case and the other is where it goes through the bulkhead under the secondary clutch. The ones that go out first are the ones usually under the clutch.

I did a visual inspection of these and from the outside they looked to be centered and operational. Is it work taking them out to make sure they are still working properly?

I guess the best would be to search some YouTube videos so you have a better understanding. Another thing it could be if something is broken in your secondary and your belt was sucked down it would act like your trying to take off in 5th gear in a car.

Did you figure out whats going on yet?

I have a 05 Edge 550 fanner and I am experiencing the same problem. My engine always starts and will idle fine, the clutched appear to be clean and free of movement. the track will rotate fine when its on a stand, but when I try to rev it up it wont get enough rpm to move the sled. The clutches will engage but theres no power to move the sled. Ive cleaned the carbs, ive tried to choke it for more power and still nothing. It also appears to be running on both cylinders.

Please let me know here if you figure it out

I haven’t yet. I’m really at a loss on what it could be but sounds like your having the same issue. I also had it seam like it was running great, then I stop it for a minute and it’s just the same issues again. I’m pretty sure my carbs are clean and running properly. I’m going to double check that I’m getting spark in both cylinders. My bearings seam fine, clutch seams fine. Just at a loss. Frustrating.

Have you tried anything electrical? Could we have bad coils or stator?

I’ve done everything you did with the exception of pulling apart the fuel pump or messing with electronics. I don’t know if there’s a TPS sensor, but perhaps unplugging it if there is one? Have you looked inside the gas tank to make sure the screen isn’t clogged and that the fuel line hasn’t fell apart?

I haven’t tried anything electrical yet. I may give that a shot this weekend. I did check the hose in the gas tank as well as the screen and both are in good shape. Good suggestions- will let you know how it progresses
