Just bought a 98 XC 700 and a 96 XCR. They're in good shape and run, but I want to get them serviced before the snow flies. What is the minimum I should have done and what would you recommend above that? For example; new plugs, track alignment, etc....?

Check every nut and bolt and grease every fitting on the entire machine. If they run good carbs are probably fine. The key word is probably.

I would check:
  • ski carbides
  • slides
  • clean carbs
  • replace gas, and you only need plugs if it dont run well after carb cleaning
  • go thru skid, looking for bad wheels or bearings, check for loose bolts and warn pivot bushings, then grease
  • Check lower bearings and seals on drive shaft for leaks or bad bearings
  • Replace gear case oil and look for metal on the oil
