none yet - questions about a potential buy
Hello,
I do not currently own a snowmobile. I joined this forum to get some help and feedback. My neighbor is moving out of his house and selling some snowmobiles. They have been sitting for close to 10 years, basically outside for most of the time. I was curious to see what they would be worth fixed up. I'm pretty handy, and I'm looking for a good project for this winter. I don't have model numbers currently. But I know both machines are 2002 Polaris. One is blue and has an X on the front with yellow graphics. The other is red, and has the graphic saying Variable Exhaust System on the front hood. It also has yellow letters on the hood. I'm told that the red one has hit speeds of over 100 mph. Both have around 4000 miles on them. Looking to see what these might be worth? He's offering them to me for a VERY low price. Any help is appreciated!

Check to see if the blue one has a m10 in the rear for suspension and you really need to find out what models they are to be sure on the prices.

For sure. I will get a picture of them on Saturday. I'll also get the exact number of miles.
To be clear, the owner is offering both to me for about $500.

I've never worked on these machines before, are they relatively simple for a DIY guy to work out and get running again?

Sounds nice and cheap for sure. You should be able to triple your money parting them out but would be more fun to get them both running as long as the ran before they were parked.

Definitely.
I was told they ran great when parked. They were stored half inside a barn, for most of the time. Is there anything I should check for and inspect when I get the model numbers this weekend?

Okay guys I took some pics today. One of them is actually a ski doo. Looking for guidance on what these might be worth. The one is a Polaris X edge SP 700. And the other is a ski doo Legend rotax 500. Ski doo has 2000 miles
And Polaris has around 4400 miles. To mention one more thing, he also has a ski doo MXZ 500SS for sale for 1500. Wanted to see what would be the best deal. Thanks in advance.

Correct. 500 for the first two. Any ideas what they might be worth fixed up? I think they all ran prior to sitting for about 10 years.

Nice.
I checked the NADA and they were both valued right around $1000 each.
Should be picking these up this week. Anything I should do to get these skis ready to run again other than drain the gas, maybe fog the cylinders, change the spark plugs?

I would clean the carbs and drain all the fuel with 91 octane and change plugs. Dont need to fog them, that twill just make them harder to start.

Roger that.
I just figured since sitting I didn't want to score the cylinders, Is there anything else I can do to lube them up just as a precaution?

Should not score if there is nothing wrong with them.. if your conerned , then toss a cap of 2 stroke oil down each hole and slowly pull the rope with kill switch off and plugs out.

No help on the ske du. The Polaris, is a 700 XCSP ves motor. Not a edge x. 700 motor is very good. Kind of the sweet spot for that year Polaris. Sitting outside can create a mulitude of issues. Seized bushing in suspension. Shock shafts rusted, bearings rusted in motor. No more than $1000 to purchase, and to be safe, a thousand in reserve to rebuild what is needed

Gotcha. I wasn't sure. I did buy these. I paid 500 for the pair. These two were both inside of the barn, however, door was open so they were open to some of the elements. I will be sure to check out the suspension components as well as the engine. I;m going to start with some new batteries, spark plugs, and fresh fluids and see if they start up. Is there anything else I should check out before starting?

Nice purchase. I had that same 02 700 sled new, that was definitely the best running year for those engines with the timing curve they had.
I would pull the carbs before adding any fluids and make sure theres no debris in the bowls since you have no idea how they were put up.
It will also give you a chance to try and shoot some fogging oil ( even wd-40) into the bottom end since its going to be bone dry after sitting 10 years. I would also consider pre-mixing 5 gallons of gas & oil to use to get it running at first to get some extra oil in there initially.
You dont have to do this initially but take a good look at the fuel lines, they are probably rock hard by now. Those older lines were not very ethanol tolerant.
Also take a good look at the reeds, they might have started curling open being that old. One of my friends has a 600 he bought that year for the wife that sat for years with low mileage which started doing that when we got it running for his kids 2 years ago.

One other thing, shine a light in the tank and make sure the pick up tube hasn't rotted off or else you are never going to get fuel.

Thanks for the info!
I got them both running this weekend. I took the carbs apart and cleaned them out with carb cleaner. I just took off the bottom plate and top plate and sprayed them out real good. I didn't remove the jets but I sprayed carb cleaner into them. Drained all the gas in the tank, and added fresh gas with stabilzer. Also changed the spark plugs and they fired right up. Seemed to run very well!
