99 xc700 very dim headlights

hey everyone can anyone help I have very dim headlights have replaced stator because only have 2 v ac does it need a rectifier or voltage regulator now? also theres 2 boxes and a large capacitor what would need to be changed? any help would be apreciated

There should be ohm specs on each box and you should be able to ohm it out and see.

do you know what wires? why are there two boxes on it and a capacitor it is not electric start

I’m almost positive it’s the voltage regulator. It’s not common but that’s usually what happens on the cc’d when the lights start to get dim.

You need a new regulator. Super easy fix.

Down by your right foot behind the panel with a yellow wire attached to it.

I have an update regulator kit for that machine.

The regulator on that machine (and many others) grounds off anything over 13.0 volts. Yours has failed and is grounding off almost all of the voltage.

what is the other box above the one with the yellow wire then?

Not sure. I have a 99 XC 700 in the shop right now and this one has only a single regulator with nothing else mounted near it.

What color are the wires going to it?

Take a picture of it and post it on here I may be able to tell you what it is.

It could also be a wire shorted to ground.

Start the machine, leave it at idle, and unplug the single yellow wire going to the regulator. If the regulator is bad and you go much above idle with the yellow wire unplugged the voltage goes thru the roof and you will burn out bulbs.

With yellow wire unplugged at idle;
Lights get way brighter = bad regulator.
Lights stay the same = shorted wire, start by looking under the seat. If the tail light wires are not routed right they will wear thru and short out.

I believe its the electric shock module it has a harness plug going to it
