no, the shop manual doesn't show slack in chain, I got this way back online in gearing on polaris site cause it shows slack.

the 1.73 ratio has very little slack as I can see.
 
The Vespel slider is in there because there is less chain case noise. However you have to stay on top of chain tension a lot more than with the roller tensioner.
Agree on having to check tension more often.
The new slider may have less noise, but I'll bet it's cheaper also.
That makes the bean counters happy.
