Getting started

Need them to be 2 grams at 1/2 inch preferably about .400. At 3/4 to 1 inch you are getting into the weights midrange from either end.

K5 what I'm looking for if possible is 2.0,2.5,grams of weight that is .385 long, maybe .400, Dave just beat me to it, had to take a call. So I'm posting it anyways. Lol

I just started the process of making some of my own "super slugs" with tungsten inserts. I was planning on doing them at 3/4 and 1" lengths to get the most bang for the buck. What other lengths and weights would you like to see?

Tungsten has the highest melting point of any pure metal and so I think the manufacturing process to make a couple hundred (at most) set screws would be pretty expensive. It's MUCH cheaper to drill plain steel set set screw and press/solder in a small piece of tungsten. This is what I'm doing...

If anyone wanted some "super slugs", I'm sure I could make and ship out a few sets pretty cheaply.
K5, any progress on the tungsten inserts you mentioned trying to build?

By my scale, a standard 1/2" long slug weighed 1.8g. My modified "super" slug weighed in at 3.0g even. That would be the heaviest I could make them. Lighter would be easier. What do ya think?

That's nice for taking an adjustable base weight and making it heavier with your slugs/inserts . To me that's awesome even though I don't have a set of dalton qap's

What about 2 grams at .400 long? As long as we are doing what if's: What about .400 long, 2 grams, with the tip like in the picture being .150 in length [dimension b] and threads removed [dimension a]? This could get the set screw damn near the very tip of the weight, and keep the added weight out of the middle?

K5 see my above post please. Any thing new to report?

I haven't had any shop time recently (4yr and 6yr old at home and a wife that works 12hr shift work...) but I'll try and get back in there this weekend and see what else I can come up with. My only worry is about keeping the slug in the screw. I think I will "stake" them in with a center punch but I've tossed around the idea of soldering them in too. I'm just not comfortable with a light press fit...

Sounds good k5 . Definitely don't want anything flying out. My now 32 year old daughter used to come into the garage on the weekends mom worked. She would sit and color etc while I putzed. Same for now 25 year old son. Both were in garage by 2 years old. Son was just a average student in school but could take a Mikuni carb apart and reassemble it by 8 years old.

I'm still looking for some 1/4" set screws but in the meantime I made up a 3/8" super slug that has 1/8" stick out. It ends up being 1/2" long weighs about 2.9 g compared to a stock 3/8 slug which weighs about 1.3g. It bottoms out nicely in the tip and ends up being flush with the end of the weight. I'm going to end up making some heavier 5/8" slugs too as I'm still hitting 8450-8500 on take off.

PS. I can't seem to upload a pic. Just says "there was an error uploading your file"... :(

K5?

Have you made any set screws lately with tungsten inserts?

I got some made. 1/2" and 1" long.

1/2"= 2.8 grams
1"=5.8 grams

Can you shorten the 1/2 inchers to .400 and have them weigh close to 2 grams?

I can yes

It cost me $75.00 US or $100.00 Canadian for six 1" long set screws to get made at my buddies machine shop . I can get them to make whatever length you want
