Key Position Premium/Regular

2002 Edge 700
So I bought the 02 edge 7 and see there are 2 positions for the key. One with premium and one with regular. Is this based on octane and if so what are the cutoffs? 87 vs 91 and what exactly does it do? I suspect timing?
 
Yes timing. I always ran them on premium with 91 or 93. I think the other setting was for around 87. But not 100 percent on that.
 
Yes 87 and 91 are the cutoff's and in another group I was told that the key position essentially advances the timing a couple of degrees.
