Clutch Talk

Unless you have already reshimmed the spyder to less than .020 for a oem belt, doubtful you will need to reshim for Gates. Polaris sends these out with .030 to .050 belt clearance oem. With the Gates mine had .018 clearance before reshim.
Every Polaris that I've had needed shims removed, until this one. I have less than .010" clearance with the 1177 belt, and can't get the Gates to the bottom of the clutch. I did not measure the shim stack, but I'm thinking there were 2 .050's, a .032 and a .020 for a total of .152", if Polaris still uses the shims from past years.
If I do reshim for the Gates, will that screw up the ramp shift profile? Would I be better off doing the old "2 minute mexican overdrive" by removing about .040" from the bottom of the sheaves? Any input is welcome!

Polaris factory uses a very light film of oil on the crank because sleds sit for long periods sometimes. That's why it was easy with clutch puller .
It did have a light film of oil on the crank, and it looked like the clutch had rotated on the crank, as you could see rings around the stub. Wiped off clean with no galling of either the stub or clutch hub. I have only started and drove the sled enough to get it off the truck and into the garage. Glad I looked at this before riding it.

I've also found that it is important to torque bolt run the sled then retorque the bolt on these I've seen a few that were loose after running with only the Initial torque applied.

I've seen pretty much the same myself.

Good post.

Clutching can have a lot of debates.

The meat and bones of clutching is the primary weight and secondary helix. Springs are for fine tuning.

My style of clutching is run as heavy as weights as possible and using the softest springs.

Belt to sheave clearance for trail sleds is better when it's around 0.010"- 0.020" as to much clearance may cause the belt to slip over time/wear.

Gear ratios are a huge player too
Hey Brock, Whats a good weight to get? We r gearing to 1.74 and using a gates belt. I see some talk on the daltons. A bit pricey but easy to adjust. Not sure on other types as we are new to doing our own mods.

Um ok.
I like different weights for different reasons.

But for fast trail and all around every person use. Hmmmm.
I like a heavy heel and tip weight. Daltons are good. I like the profile. Their a little more aggressive then the stock 10 series.
Slp makes a more aggressive profile, so does straight line. But not to aggressive that you can't trail ride them.

Are adjustable weights recommended??
To be honest.

I would only recommend adjustable weights to people that know how and have the tools to test. Just my opinion.

Makes sense but we'll get it. My riding partner raced quads for years so he at least has racing background. I thought to go adjustable in case,,,, we need to adjust.

If you are not going drag racing every weekend then yes grab a set of Dalton QAP3s.
Even for drag racing they serve the purpose well enough for the average guy.

Ok, thx, maybe you guys can steer me in the right direction so im not out to lunch with my set up. Going by what ive read,
gearing to 23/40
gates belt
120-310 pr
155-222 2nd
70gr (add 2 for gates)
for now stock helix (still learning on this topic)
We ride in maine, nice fast groomed trail.

There are a few that I have tested. 58-44 .46 with stock spring is better then stock. I like either the 48-44 full with stock spring or 50-44 with a 140/200 spring.

the 22/38 with 68 pitch chain has less dog leg then the 1.74 ratio by the way.

A good helix for fast trail is 50/44 , like doc said .

I didn't notice that on the chart. I have the gear and chain already but can always return and get 22,38. How important is the longer dog leg??

Minus, Doo you do your own machining ?

I may have asked this before, Windchill back in the 98 XC700 days?
