Received my QAP-3 weights today. None of them are threaded internally all the way to the tip end. Visually you can see it. Measuring a bottomed insert to the tip, they come up short by, .133, .161, .181 All 3 different. Is this right? Anyone else come across this? No way to fully load the tip this way. Best pic I can get

Yes that's the way they are, You can turn down the end of the set screws to allow them to go to the tip (or past).

also to keep them balanced with each other depth mic or caliper for the edge of the entrance hole to each weight to verify they are screwed in to the same depth

Thanks. I figured I may have to do that to the inserts, if the weights always come this way..

I read your post to fast and missed that. My 2 sets of Dalton's aren't like that. Maybe they did that to avoid the pins POSSIBLY vibrating out the end. Cant see it but hey they did put a man on the moon!

The tips are closed off like that so that the screws don't come out at the tip and cause damage is how I interpret that. As for different measurements at the tip thanks for pointing that out.

Several say theirs are like mine, another with 2 sets that aren't. I can understand the thinking about bottoming out, but if for some reason you only wanted mid or heel weight, there goes that thinking. Dalton does suggest to use blue loctite when you have moved the insert several times. Where's Flasch? I am sure he knows all about this.

I could be wrong, but the CPC weights are different. If memory serves me correctly the tip weight on those is put in from the tip,I will confirm this and report back..

Ed, you have used these weights for years. Explain what you do bud and take a pic:D

I have the daltons but there not the adjustables set screws. I made them with magnets( oh geez that's another topic)

Well I don't have a pic yet so I'll try and explain it. I usually go with a 110-290 spring cause I don't use studs. I load up the heel til it can't pull it then go to the next lightest weight. If I need tip weight I keep adding weight til it can't pull it then go to the last weight that it could pull rpm with then put heel weight back in then make minor adjustments from there til I get my desired rpm. Trust me when I say that if I can get these weights to work anybody can. ;)

I understand that Ed, but without modifiying either the threads in the weight, or the threads on a insert, there is no way to get the insert all the way to the very tip on the weights I have. Maybe that doesn't matter. Before someone pipes up that I am complaining, I am stating facts about the weights I have. I am not saying they won't work. I am trying to get all the info and various opinions from users I can on them. It seems some guys say my weights are normal, and some say they aren't. Some say they work, some say they don't. Kind of like many clutch setups. Nothing works for everyone. I am sure this post will have those that agree with me, and those claiming I am clueless.

You're definitely not clueless Dave. Every set of Daltons that I've ever seen the threads don't go all of the way to the tip. This could be so that the weight that is put in doesn't come out of the tip and cause damage. Have you tried contacting Dalton and asking why?

Just e-mailed them a minute ago, Fuse.

The daltons worked good and were quick and easy to change , the reason went away from them is I could not get enough weight moved to wear I wanted but these were on 94gr arms so with a 70gr setup a few gram change will have more affect . With these you can also lock 2 smaller set screws against each other where you want with in the threaded hole

For those interested, my ? sent to Dalton;
"I recently purchased a set of QAP-3 weights form Wahl Brothers Racing. On all three weights the internal threads for the inserts do not go all the way to the very tip. Is this normal? I wanted to get the insert to the very end for tip weigh. Also all three weights internal threads stop at different depths from the end. I screwed the same 5/8 insert into each weight. This insert bottoms out at 133 thousands, 161 thousands, and 188 thousands from the very tip end on each weight.. Maybe insignificant?"

Daltons reply:
"
Hi David.
The set screws do not go all the way to the tip. That is normal. The depth of that tapping in tool steel is very sensitive to loads on the clutch. Seeing up to .050 variance is also not abnormal. and you are right, it is insignificant."

Dale at Dalton industries knows his stuff. He's one of the few aftermarket companies that I deem reputable.

I found these setscrews at McMaster Carr. The extended tips might be worth a try to put some weigh all the way to the Daltons weight tip.Does anyone know in equal size if 18-8 stainless or alloy steel, if one is heavier than the other?
