New to the forum just getting back into riding this year. A little about me Im 35 starting riding at 8 years old with my grandpa. My grandpa was a snowmobiling freak and thats putting it lightly. He was always the guy with the fastest newest sled each and every year was always working on the clutches, piping them, etc. By the time I was 12 it was nothing to go to the UP with him and ride 200-300 miles a day for the entire weekend. I really got out of riding though about 9 years ago because I moved out to Vegas. Although looking back now I wish I would have forced myself to stay in it I missed some great opportunities to got to the mountains in Utah to ride.

Anyway so my last sled was a 2002 Edge XC 800. I broke down this year and bought a new Rush ProS 800. I can honestly say Ive never had more fun riding than this year the way this sled handles the trails is amazing. I put about 1000 miles on this year and really disappointing that the season here in MI is really over.

I do have a list of things I want to do this summer to improve the performance of this sled but have several hesitations. First dont really want to risk doing too much and blowing the engine on a 12k sled that isnt paid for but then again we only live once right.

So if anyone can offer any help or advice on where to find the best tips on modifications it would be greatly appreciated. I am somewhat intimidated by the EFI and all the electrical adjustments, power commanders, etc. Also I never really got into the technical details of clutches and gears because I was too young at the time so Im not so familiar with the ratios, spring rates, weights, etc. If anyone has any suggestions on where I can go to learn more about these either online (video format preferably) or a class I would appreciate it. Or if anyone is in the SE MI area and is willing to help, teach, or just point me to a good performance shop please let me know.

Oh and so here is my wish list for the summer, clearly cant do it all because of money so Ill list most likely to least, most likely will have to include HP / speed gains lest likely would be handling and aesthetics:

Pipe / muffler
Clutch
Gears / chain
Power Command module
SLP Power Dome Billet Heads
Upgrade Skis
Colored Ski Spindles
New windshield
Hand guards
GPS unit
And Id really like to get some graphics or wrap just for the tank area way too much black blending in with the seats

Any other cheap suggestions?

Hey! Welcome to the group! I have a switchback and a rush 800 axys. Love them! I ride the UP as well and northern Wisconsin. Sad the snow sucks this year. My rush is pretty much stock but my Switchback has pretty much all the mods you listed.

proS800 how do you like the switchback compared to the rush? I do mostly trail riding but like to hit the trails hard and fast. What pipe, clutch, and gear setup do you have?

Welcome to the site my friend!!

Lots of good people to help you out with any questions you have on here.

I sent you a pm back on your original message.

They are both great sleds. The switchback handles the deeper snow and studder bumps better the the rush is a rocket in the trails. I have bikeman pipe, ssi head, clutched, 1.74 gears, 50/44 helix . I ride trails all day

The AXYS has plenty of hp stock for a sort of newcomer. Work on getting what is there out of it with clutching and gearing before you worry about pipes/mufflers/power commanders.

Im not really a newcomer to riding just into the modification side of snowmobiles. Ive been riding for about 25 years now and certainly and not afraid of the HP or speed. Mechanically Ive certainly done my fair share of work on trucks, cars, dirt bikes, etc. but never much on sleds. Ive torn down a sled before including the clutches, chain case, exhaust, heads, etc. just never got into the science behind which weights and which springs have different effects so that is really what I want to learn. When I said I was somewhat reluctant and intimidated it is more by the electrical side just because Ive never done it before the rest if I can figure out ratios and what weights and springs have what effects Im more than comfortable with.

Align clutches.

Index clutch belt to sheave with new belt 0.015"

Adjust proper belt deflection

Set track and chain tension just a little loser then stock poo specs.

Set suspension properly to get good hole shot and rail the corners in the front. I have been setting rider sag in weight on the pro s models to 4 inches+. That measurement is from floor up to top bolt of k brace. Should be around 20-24 inches.

Set this stuff before any clutching, gearing or mods Div20

Thanks Brock, Id read that information you posted before. Ive checked all of that, except maybe the 4 in sag and everything has been in order for that. Going to be putting my dads 600 up for the summer this weekend and Im sure while Im in the barn Ill start messing with mine to get things apart, cleaned, and ready for pipe and clutch this summer. I went through your thread on the pipe shoot out Ive got a call into SSI to see what the expected delivery schedule is for their SS pipe for the price over the bikeman with similar results I dont know if you can beat it. Still got lots of options / reading to do on the clutches to determine exactly what the plan will be. I really wish it was August or September not March...

I don't like the ssi pipe mod. Throws det codes on my rush. My switchback with the bikeman pipe has never thrown a det code even without the tunner on it. Just my opinion. I'm putting another bikeman pipe on my rush now

I've done both. Stock muffler and slp can and both throw a code with ssi pipe and neither one throws codes with bikeman pipe

THERE ARE TWO REASONS FOR THAT, THE SSI PIPE MOD ONLY HAD A MAP BUILT FOR 100% THROTTLE AND WAS DONE ON A MY15 SLED. SECONDLY THE PIPE IS NOT FREE FLOWING,THE INTERNAL LONG STINGER IS ALOWING THE PIPE TO RETAIN TO MUCH HEAT WHICH IS BUILDING BACK TEMP. TO THE MOTOR,CAUSING DET. TWO WAYS TO FIX IT: GET RID OF THE PIPE, OR MAP SOME FUEL IN THE AFFECTED AREA. MOST OF THE DET ISSUES IM HEARING ARE ON THE MY16,SLEDS

proS800's avy is a 2015 axys? Heath did you mean get rid of the stinger or actually not running the ssi mod?

WHAT I MENT WAS RUN A PIPE THAT DOESNT HAVE AN INTERNAL STINGER, OR IF YOU HAVE A SSI MOD YOUR GOING TO HAVE TO ADD SOME FUEL TO THE LEAN AREAS CAUSING THE DET..

Mine does also. I adjusted my maps richer and thought it was fixed but it still does it randomly it seems like. I run it wide open drag racing, running it hard down the trail without issues then all the sudden I get a DET code doing the same thing. Sled runs awesome other than getting a code once in a while but it is very frustrating you have to pull over and shut the sled off and restart it will only rev to 6700 rpm I think it closes the exhaust valves. Hard to do when you in the middle of a ride with a bunch of guys and embarrassing

To original poster,
clutch it. I have a SSI clutch package and really like it, gear it to 1.74 ratio. if you change the gearing you will need to take it to a dealer and reprogram the computer so you get the right mph and odometer. I am also with proS800 the SSI pipe mod is driving me crazy with the DET codes. If I would have done it again I would have just left the pipe stock.

I was under the impression that the design of the bikeman pipe is basically the same as the SSI? Doesn't the Bikeman pipe have an internal stinger?

So was I?

It's not the same design and yes the stinger is 7 inches. Ssi is like 11 inches or something . But the bikeman pipe is alot fatter then the pipe mod to. Yes both my sleds are 2015s
