Clutching and gearing

I aim to find a nice all around DAILY DRIVER. unless you want to constantly tweak daily as conditions change. find the sweet spot and log some miles;);)
 
If you geared down and dident change the rear helix, that's ur problem. You took load away from the motor by dropping the gear and diddnt reload by making ur secondary work. Ur issue is in the sec.
 
I'm a bit baffled, getting diff opinions. If I go to 1.74 with 120/310, 72g, 50/44 with 140/200 and a gates belt will this set up work on fast maine trails.

I'll put it this way.
Example:
You grass drag for 500' and use a tall ratio of 1.95 and a lower ratio of 2.21. They both get 82mph at the end of the track. But 99% of the time the lower gear ratio et's way faster. So the lower gear ratio is more efficient.
When you use lower gear ratios, you can add heavy weight and use light springs. This is ideal.
When you use taller gear ratios, you have to use ligther weights and most times guys use stiffer spring rates to try and hold rpm. This is more friction,less ideal.

Just the way I do it. Not for everyone

I ran all that you have listed in Maine on fast trail except my ratio was 1.67, my mod weights, and Polaris belt( gates wasent available yet) and it flys. Also used a 48-44 full with stock spring , and that flys.
 
The Polaris manual on springs of free length,2.5" load , 1.19" loadand 1.31" of travel is what there spec is.
Measured a couple again today.
One is 2.5825" load, 1.27" load and 1.31" travel.
The other is 2.531" load,1.215" load and 1.31" travel.
Both are right from factory spider and cover that holds spring is one and a half thousand out of square. This is good.

Now these clutches have to go by 2.58" load and 1.27" load for the one and 2.53" load and 1.21" load. So engagement won't be as high or spring at full shift out won't be as high. So a 140/300 spring will be ruffly 135/295 because of load.

I don't like the 1.19" load as springs tend to bind. 1.25 is good.

Thx Brock, that helps. I think i'll put it all in and try it out. We run more corner to corner than the long fast cruising. Sounds like the low gearing is better for that arm stretching fun. My buddy is being gun shy and only doing springs and a gates belt. Hopefully this beats him. I like the idea of less friction.

Sooo nice up there, we go to jackman and when trails are good we ride to matagamon and back, about 370. We head out at 7 and get back at 530 as long as no problems. We boogie. Hey another question,,, can I run the gates belt without any mods (other than the gearing and clutching I mentioned)

I ride Maine all the time. I would like to maybe meet this yr to see the difference myself with lower gears. Kinda the same, but my Supercharged car is faster with 3.73s then it was with 4.11s. Most likely due to where the Rpm ended and where it made its power. I kinda agree lower isn't always better.

This gearing and clutching is all new to me but the more I read and the more questions I ask the more I understand. First off its a cvt system and the gearing is only one part of it. Changes can be made in the clutches to accommodate changes in the gearing (cant do that in a car). I can see where all this works although I'm not quite sure why the belt rides higher on the clutch after gearing down, which is where I believe the higher top end comes from. Having lower gears gets you better et which imo gets you better corner to corner, as long as you change your cvt system. Now the part that i'm stuck at is it didn't work for some guys. I'm gonna try it as I have the parts and nothing to loose. My buddy also has a 15 pro s shorty and is only doing springs (to help hold the r's) and I think a can, so we can compare. The axys is supposed to be better than the pro r but I think my 13 was quicker and faster. I think these changes will help.
